5-Star Review:

"The novel is multidimensional. There are several plot elements working simultaneously that the author handles with skill. The murder of his friend and the personal relationship between Jon and his lady friend, a rape victim, add depth to the novel. The story shifts between the current investigation and his previous, very dangerous, actions in Lebanon as a CIA operative."

                                        CHAPTER FOUR

                                  BEIRUT, Lebanon - 1993
                                      American Embassy

Salim Khalaf (his alias), a handsome Lebanese, about 5.7” curly-haired, dressed in a green polo-shirt and blue jeans, was already sitting at one of the tables before the American case officers reached there.

He appeared slightly apprehensive and tensed, watching them approach him, while intently observing the tall figure of Jonathan.  But Robert’s friendly hug and Bradley’s open, warm disposition put him at ease, as they both shook hands like old friends.

“So, Thomas (Robert’s alias),” Salim spoke with the Lebanese Arabic accent, “is this Marc (Jonathan’s alias), who you said will be taking over from you? I hope he is as good as you are.”

“Not to worry, Salim.  You’ll be alright. He will handle things right, just the way it’s between us now.”

Bradley had studied in-depth Salim’s personal biography appearing in his dossier, and Armstrong’s personal evaluation about his agent, including summaries of intelligence reports coming from this source.

“I assure you of that, Salim,” Jonathan said quickly, “And I can already see that we have got on to a good start.”

“I am glad to hear that, Marc” Salim was smiling, apparently his initial apprehensions cast aside.

“Now how about celebrating?  Arak, Italian wine or Champagne, Salim?”  Robert offered to lighten the environment.

“Why not Champagne, Thomas?” And you, Marc?”

“Champagne would be just fine.”

They carried on a small talk about the present political situation in Beirut while they had their drinks over the dinner course.

There was no serious discussion about their covert operation at this meeting, since they would meet again before Jon took control of the agent.

Salim was one of their important assets for he worked undercover for 'MOKAFAHA' and was able to access crucial intelligence from inside his Anti-Terrorism Unit and deliver information and communicate warnings on the activities of the warring factions of the PLF, Hamas, Hezbollah and the other Islamic-Jihadist groups operating in Lebanon.

He was a willing target for recruitment and had been cultivated over a period of two years by Robert. More than monetary benefits, Salim sought a better life for himself and his small family in the USA. The discreet arrangement being that over a period of time, the Embassy would provide the U.S.A. immigration papers for his family to leave first and he would join them later.

It was, however, agreed between them to maintain the existing locations of the two “dead drops” for their clandestine communication.

The next meeting of a more clandestine nature would be at the safe-house, and they set up a date for it.

Moments before they parted, Jonathan passed on a U.S.A. travel brochure over to Salim, quietly saying, “Compliments from Langley.”

Salim appeared cheerful, nodding his thanks, glanced at the picturesque booklet and transferred it to his trouser pocket. Afterward, he watched the two Americans leave the restaurant.

Over the next two years, besides cultivating one “walk-in” into a useful intelligence source, and a high profile “agent” from the Lebanese Christian Phalangists Political party, Bradley conducted and took part in covert field operations thwarting plots against the Embassy in Lebanon and even venturing into Damascus, to release western relief workers taken hostages by Syrian rebels.

The Title Line or HOOK
(The make or break element of the Song)

Title Line Can Tell a Tale

You could take the first title, “Why does it have to be this way?” and see what random ideas you can come up with. First of all, the questioning nature of the title invokes curiosity. The listener would be keen enough to know what‟s the explanation (story) behind the Why?

This title can be interpreted in different ways:

(a) From a human interest point of view, it could mean a relationship on the rocks. Here we could develop the reasons for the relationship going wrong and maybe asking for or offering reconciliation or patch-up of some sort. Everything appeared to be going fine until some diversion came up, viz. In the form of another person, a misunderstanding, past history, a malicious rumor, some untoward incident or happening, affecting the relationship of the parties involved and so on.

(b) In a general way – the Title could be making a circumstantial statement about an event or happening or from a point of view arising from whatever manner of living – thoughts and action. And we could develop a story from any such personal or social theme.

Let‟s subject the title line, “Why does it have to be this Way?” to some scrutiny from a flashback point of view of a personal relationship:

Who is making this statement?
Who else is involved?
What led to making this statement?
What went wrong? How did it come about?
When did this happen?
Who is to blame?
Is reconciliation possible?
Do the parties desire it?
Or is it the end, kaput, to the relationship?
Regrets? No Regrets?
How does the theme end?

Here‟s one way to make a start:

Why does it have to be this way?
You and I made a pledge
Never like memories to fade away
But now how strangely we behave
The pretenses we act and the things we say
Past caring who or how much we hurt
Leveling the score, never to trust
Why does it have to be this way?

As an imaginative exercise, take the above theme forward and see what you make of the rest verses, a chorus and bridge. Of course, you could rewrite the above example to suit your theme.

Start making a list of words or phrases by way of expressing the thoughts, emotions and images that come to your mind from answering such queries. Write down as many as you can. To be more graphic or colorful, look into the thesaurus for other similar words and phrases and then check them against those of opposite meanings.

Proceeding with this line of examining any title or theme and depending on what answers you come up with, you will at least have a glimmer of an idea or some outline of a story line for your song lyrics, which you can later improvise with better lyrics incorporating graphic, emotive words and phrases of varied structure for overall contrast in the song.

PART ONE

 CHAPTER FOUR (Continued)

   1510 BC – Tuthmosis III

The period of opportunity knocked at Tuthmosis’ door when Queen Hatshepsut sent her trusted Vizier on a peacekeeping mission to Ta netjer.

Tuthmosis was now approaching his twenty-seventh year. He had grown into maturity; his features consisted of a lowbrow, black deep-set eyes, a square jaw, thin lips, and prominent cheekbones. His height was average and he had the physique of an athlete. He bore the natural posture and stride of a military man.

Tuthmosis had picked up the domineering personality of his stepmother in displaying authority, courage, and a shrewd mind. He had many years of firsthand experience gained from sharing the co-regency with Queen Hatshepsut.

However, Tuthmosis had witnessed Queen Pharaoh mellowing with age. Besides, she had never recovered from the accidental death of her teenage daughter, Neferure. Her declining health was another minus point in his report against her. Tuthmosis decided that she has had her days of glory and that Queen Hatshepsut must go.

Inside the Co-regent’s personal chamber in the Royal Court, Tuthmosis held a private meeting with three leading members of the Ruling Council - the President, the Chief Priest Amun-Ra, and the Chief Political Agent.

Tuthmosis was addressing them. "The right time we waited for all these years has arrived. Senenmut yields the power in Kemet. He will remain abroad for many months. Without the powerful presence of Senenmut to influence the court officials, the support of her few loyal nobles like the southern Vizier Hapuseneb, shall not matter much. We act now considering her disadvantage.”

“Vizier Hapuseneb is an important elder statesman, a leading member of the Ruling Council and a high priest of Amun-Ra,” said the Political Agent.

The Chief Priest raised both his hands, "I speak for the Amun-Ra clergy. We stand in full support behind the rightful heir, the young Co-regent Tuthmosis. We shall back him to regain his position as the true "beloved son of god" as destined by our supreme Amun-Ra", and put them down as he finished talking.

"I value the trust you place in me, O holy one," Tuthmosis acknowledged with reverence.

Then it was the turn of the Ruling Council leader. "I’ve the undisputed support of 12 council members, and I expect the same from five more. The scale swings in our favor. Nevertheless, we shall apply the needed pressure, or play on their ambitions to make them comply.”

He further tried to reassure the Pharaoh. “We shall take care of the loose ends. Have no fear about any opposition coming from the Council members. What’re your plans, my Lord?”

“The army pledges its loyalty to me. There is no doubt about this. Besides the Kemite soldiers and conscripts, many are combat veterans, Irtjet-Ta-Seti, Medja-Ta-Seti, and mercenaries, who owe no allegiance to the impostor Senenmut or to Hatshepsut.

He says he is my stepbrother, but I know for certain that he has no royal blood in him. I am the true son of my father Tuthmosis II, and the legal heir apparent, according to his will witnessed at his deathbed.

"That evil woman who calls herself my stepmother has usurped my rights even after I came of age. How absurd? The great Kemite sacred culture does not allow the rule of a female Pharaoh. It is destined for the bloodline of male Pharaohs to bear the solemn title of the ‘son of god’ Atum-Ra.

"How shameful that she even dresses like a man and officiates as the King Pharaoh? Is it not a blasphemy that she proclaims herself the ‘Wife of god Amun-Ra’? She will go to any length to stay in power. We cannot allow her to continue degrading our sacred culture anymore.”

“Yes, yes… What the Lord Pharaoh speaks is the truth,” the rest of them concurred in support, “Hatshepsut must go.”

“Well, now that we’re all of one accord, we shall meet again tomorrow night to discuss the details.”

“Meantime,” giving each one a stern look, Tuthmosis warned, “Not a word of this meeting to anyone, even your wives and mistresses.”

“You have our solemn word of honor that this meeting will remain a secret. May the strong-arm of our most sacred Amun-Ra, guide and protect us. And, you - our beloved Lord Pharaoh - before everything else.” Their lowered voices echoed as one in the silent chamber.

While they left, the Co-Regent felt elated because the result was as he had expected. This proved the extent of his power over them. God Amun-Ra had exalted him. He was about to claim what belonged to him by the right of his royal birth in the priest-god dynasty of the Pharaoh Kings.
