 CHAPTER FOUR (Continued)

   1510 BC – Tuthmosis III

The period of opportunity knocked at Tuthmosis’ door when Queen Hatshepsut sent her trusted Vizier on a peacekeeping mission to Ta netjer.

Tuthmosis was now approaching his twenty-seventh year. He had grown into maturity; his features consisted of a lowbrow, black deep-set eyes, a square jaw, thin lips, and prominent cheekbones. His height was average and he had the physique of an athlete. He bore the natural posture and stride of a military man.

Tuthmosis had picked up the domineering personality of his stepmother in displaying authority, courage, and a shrewd mind. He had many years of firsthand experience gained from sharing the co-regency with Queen Hatshepsut.

However, Tuthmosis had witnessed Queen Pharaoh mellowing with age. Besides, she had never recovered from the accidental death of her teenage daughter, Neferure. Her declining health was another minus point in his report against her. Tuthmosis decided that she has had her days of glory and that Queen Hatshepsut must go.

Inside the Co-regent’s personal chamber in the Royal Court, Tuthmosis held a private meeting with three leading members of the Ruling Council - the President, the Chief Priest Amun-Ra, and the Chief Political Agent.

Tuthmosis was addressing them. "The right time we waited for all these years has arrived. Senenmut yields the power in Kemet. He will remain abroad for many months. Without the powerful presence of Senenmut to influence the court officials, the support of her few loyal nobles like the southern Vizier Hapuseneb, shall not matter much. We act now considering her disadvantage.”

“Vizier Hapuseneb is an important elder statesman, a leading member of the Ruling Council and a high priest of Amun-Ra,” said the Political Agent.

The Chief Priest raised both his hands, "I speak for the Amun-Ra clergy. We stand in full support behind the rightful heir, the young Co-regent Tuthmosis. We shall back him to regain his position as the true "beloved son of god" as destined by our supreme Amun-Ra", and put them down as he finished talking.

"I value the trust you place in me, O holy one," Tuthmosis acknowledged with reverence.

Then it was the turn of the Ruling Council leader. "I’ve the undisputed support of 12 council members, and I expect the same from five more. The scale swings in our favor. Nevertheless, we shall apply the needed pressure, or play on their ambitions to make them comply.”

He further tried to reassure the Pharaoh. “We shall take care of the loose ends. Have no fear about any opposition coming from the Council members. What’re your plans, my Lord?”

“The army pledges its loyalty to me. There is no doubt about this. Besides the Kemite soldiers and conscripts, many are combat veterans, Irtjet-Ta-Seti, Medja-Ta-Seti, and mercenaries, who owe no allegiance to the impostor Senenmut or to Hatshepsut.

He says he is my stepbrother, but I know for certain that he has no royal blood in him. I am the true son of my father Tuthmosis II, and the legal heir apparent, according to his will witnessed at his deathbed.

"That evil woman who calls herself my stepmother has usurped my rights even after I came of age. How absurd? The great Kemite sacred culture does not allow the rule of a female Pharaoh. It is destined for the bloodline of male Pharaohs to bear the solemn title of the ‘son of god’ Atum-Ra.

"How shameful that she even dresses like a man and officiates as the King Pharaoh? Is it not a blasphemy that she proclaims herself the ‘Wife of god Amun-Ra’? She will go to any length to stay in power. We cannot allow her to continue degrading our sacred culture anymore.”

“Yes, yes… What the Lord Pharaoh speaks is the truth,” the rest of them concurred in support, “Hatshepsut must go.”

“Well, now that we’re all of one accord, we shall meet again tomorrow night to discuss the details.”

“Meantime,” giving each one a stern look, Tuthmosis warned, “Not a word of this meeting to anyone, even your wives and mistresses.”

“You have our solemn word of honor that this meeting will remain a secret. May the strong-arm of our most sacred Amun-Ra, guide and protect us. And, you - our beloved Lord Pharaoh - before everything else.” Their lowered voices echoed as one in the silent chamber.

While they left, the Co-Regent felt elated because the result was as he had expected. This proved the extent of his power over them. God Amun-Ra had exalted him. He was about to claim what belonged to him by the right of his royal birth in the priest-god dynasty of the Pharaoh Kings.
