Reviews:

"A Contemporary Masterwork of Mystery, Thriller & Suspense!" The author has the ability to lure the reader into this dark and murky world - kicking and screaming if need be!"

"The novel is multidimensional. There are several plot elements working simultaneously that the author handles with skill. The murder of his friend and the personal relationship between Jon and his lady friend, a rape victim, add depth to the novel. The story shifts between the current investigation and his previous, very dangerous, actions in Lebanon as a CIA operative."

"The fact that it is the first of three books makes Crossfire all that more compelling plus it's a fun to read. Paul POV shifts from telling a story to the illusion of real time which creates a healthy tension throughout. One of the finer elements in the book that helps make it authentic is the authors knowledge of the geo areas where the story takes place."

CHAPTER ONE
New York City - 2006
FBI Counterterrorism Division
Saturday - 2.30 AM

“Nothing like that, ya Ahmed.  I get around.  You know how it is?” Youssef interrupted him.
His interest had been spiked by his friend’s comment about his father’s new tenants, and he wanted to know more.  “How’s my father doing?”
“You ought to visit him sometimes, ya Youssef. Patch up whatever your differences with him. He is your father after all, and he is getting older.”
“Guess, you are right, ya Ahmed.  I must make amends.”
Then Youssef Hariri tried to veer the subject towards the new arrivals. “Have you spoken to these new tenants?  What news do they bring from Lebanon?”
“Only to wave at and say hello.  As you’d know, we are not exactly your next-door neighbors.  And, I don’t yet know whether they have come directly from Lebanon.
“But, I see that they do have visitors turning up at the house now and then, who may be taking them out sight-seeing the city or even visiting some relatives.
“Perhaps, when you call on your father, you can make their acquaintance, that is, if they are still there,” Ahmed ended with a smug. Then looking at his watch, “Oh, I ought to be going. Don’t want to be late for my afternoon shift.”
“Ma'a Salama, ya Ahmed.
Goodbye.  See you around.”
“Ma'a Salama, ya Youssef.
“Fi Amanillah, ya Ahmed.” May Allah protect you.”
Youssef understood well that his father condemned his son’s superfluous lifestyle and would never make amends unless and until Youssef made a complete reversal to a life of a devout Muslim.  An almost impossible thing for him, considering the extent of his involvement in the extracurricular activities that he happened to be involved at this point of time.
There was something about his father’s new tenants that nagged him.  At the same time, Youssef did not want to be the source of any more trouble for his father, should the tenants turn out to be some undesirable elements.
On the other hand, not every Arab visitor or immigrant to the USA is deemed a potential threat.
Informants were duty-bound to report if they came across or heard about any new arrivals in the suspected communities.
Finally, Youssef saw no harm in making his report to his FBI boss, William King.  The latter met with Jon Bradley and it was decided to place Hariri’s new tenants under active surveillance.

***

"An hour ago, two teams of the Mossad’s Kidon (ultra-secret assassination unit) operatives, including a female, raided the Islamic-Jihadist cell. There was a firefight.  They left behind two bodies of the alleged terrorists and another of the landlord." Steve narrated to them as a matter of fact.
The others present were surprised though not shocked.  They had all along suspected that the Israel’s Mossad agents were aware of the Hezbollah Jihadist cell's presence in Yonkers.
However, since it was known among the intelligence agencies that the FBI was actively involved in the case, they had not expected the Mossad operatives to act prematurely on their own.
On an afterthought, Jon said, "I don't think they were able to lay their hands on the mastermind.  According to our surveillance, the Lebanese businessman was never seen visiting the place nor anywhere around."
"The landline was wiretapped and the house was bugged," Allan Banks came in. "William personally supervised the operation when on a Friday the occupants were all away at the Anjuman Mosque for the obligatory prayer service.
“It's possible that they suspected the house being bugged because except for normal conversations no incriminatory talk, whatsoever, was heard concerning their terror plot, both over the phone and inside the premises.
“Obviously, they will have used the cellphones or public phones to communicate with their counterparts elsewhere.”
"As I understand, informant Abdullah was the only outside source to get close to them. The old man did odd jobs for the tenants living in the block,” Agent King stated.
“Was he able to pick up any specific information about them?" asked Steve Turner.
"His last report was vague, something about seeing some drawings and pictures lying about in the living room, which he could not describe.  Abdullah is not English literate.
“At another time, Abdullah and another man were helping to unload the delivery of some wooden boxes into the tenant’s house. He happened to overhear a gist of a conversation in lowered tones, between two of the alleged terrorists, speaking in Arabic outside the house, before they noticed his presence and stopped talking. They appeared to be speaking about guns,” explained William.
Steven shrugged, getting ready to leave the conference room. "Well, we will have time to check on that later.
“Anyway, the Mossad operatives would have left the search for the Jihadist's weapons and other evidence, if any, to us. They would not have had the time for a thorough search of the premises.
“Incidentally, Judge Rothenberg, signed the Search Warrants of possible cause for both the locations.”
He rose to his feet, "The NYPD officers and our agents are already at the crime scene and have cordoned off the area.
“Let’s get there before the media are all over the place,” Turner concluded, as he strode towards the door.
Bradley and his colleagues followed him a couple of feet behind.

Lyrics: The Composition

Section 1

“The soul never thinks without a mental picture.”
– Aristotle

Basic Form or Structure of Song

Understanding the framework of a song is essential if we are to write excellent lyrics and music and even sing or perform better, particularly so to acquiring the ability to improvise spontaneously.

It is the familiarity with the song structure that the listener is comfortable with when listening to new a song - its lyrics and music. The standard structures of songs like pop, rock, country, blues, Latin and the others, which the people have been listening for decades and are easily able to relate to. Maybe one of the reasons why jazz and classical music are difficult for most people to enjoy is owing to unfamiliarity with the structure of such music.

Main Song Components

Following are the main components of a song:

  • Title or the Hook
  • Verse
  • Chorus, also called the Bridge in earlier music terminology
  • Bridge (optional)
  • Tag (optional)

Song Structure Terms

The short forms generally made use of in songwriting to indicate a song structure are:

  • "A‟ for the Verse
  • "B‟ for the Chorus
  • "C‟ for the Bridge
  • "Tag‟ for a brief ending

Popular Forms of Lyrics

For depicting the popular forms of song lyrics of today, we have:

1. AABA - meaning, the 1st Verse A is followed by the 2nd Verse AA and the latter by the Chorus B

In this form, you normally have 3 to 4 verses and the same Chorus is repeated twice; or as AAB-AAB - where the first combination of AAB would be followed by another one of AAB and may or may not end with a Tag consisting of two or more lines taken (and repeated) from the verse or chorus or just the Title as it is popularly known, the Hook. This form or variation of it is sometimes favored by the blues and rock artists.

Example: Song Title: "She is a Zombie", Lyrics Copyright 2002 Paul Rodericks:

A (1st Verse):
No colors to her dawn
No depth to her sleep
No fears to succumb
Nor rules of ethic
A creature by necessity
She's a Zombie.

AA (2nd Verse):
No colors to her dreams
No depth to her mind
No patriotic hymns
Nor love of any kind
A creature by necessity
She's a Zombie.

B (Chorus):

She's a Zombie
From her reflections within
A wall around her senses
A creature by necessity

She's a Zombie.

Then generally follows the other combination of AAB - the 3rd & 4th Verse and the Chorus Repeat.

CHAPTER TWO
New York City
 Crossley Apartments
 Monday – 3:00 P.M.

Elaine, the roommate of Samantha Clarke, had just revealed to him the name of the suspect, who, she believed had brutally assaulted and raped Samantha, his longstanding girlfriend.  The alleged perpetrator was still at large. Jonathan Bradley was taken aback, although he had heard that name mentioned before, he had not met the man in person.

For a few moments, he sat there looking thoughtfully at Elaine. Then, he remembered his promise to call Samantha after having got through to her roommate.

Elaine, however, appeared calmer than he had expected her to be, under the circumstances.  Her pretty face looked grotesque with the bruises suffered to it.

“Excuse me, I have to call Samantha.  She’d be waiting anxiously.”

Elaine got to her feet and said, “I will go make some coffee for us.”

Bradley nodded and started to dial Samantha’s number. She answered on the first ring.     He told her that he had finally managed to make contact with her roommate, and was waiting to talk to Elaine about the whole matter.  That he and Elaine would call her later.  Jonathan was glad that Samantha finally sounded appeased after his call.

“’It’s Michael Cage’,” Elaine had told him.

He was Samantha’s ex-husband.  They were childhood sweethearts and had married a year after graduation, only to divorce a year later.  Michael was now a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army.

Jonathan did not know the details of their separation, neither had he bothered to probe when Samantha first told him about her past.

Elaine returned with two cups of coffee, handed over one to Jon and settled herself on the couch facing him across the coffee-table between them.

“Was it also Michael, who hit out at you?”

“No.  That was Jamie… it was due to a misunderstanding between us,” she said almost casually.

The extent of injury that Jamie had caused her belied her statement.  There had to be more to it.  What’s happening here, Bradley wondered?

“What makes you suspect that Samantha’s ex-husband assaulted and raped her?  She would have sensed that it was him since they were married before?”

“Maybe she is afraid of Mike, or maybe she isn’t so sure, which is why she did not want to mention to you that she suspected him.”

Jon was finding it hard to understand.

”Did Samantha tell you that she suspected it was her ex-husband who raped her?”

“No, not in so many words, but I knew she was holding it back from me at the time.”

“I know that they were once married. But, as responsible adults, we did not consider it necessary to exchange personal details of our past lives.”

“He stalked her, and I think they even met.”

“When did this happen?  Samantha never once hinted at it or mentioned about this. And, if she had suspected him, she’d have certainly named him.”

“I believe he wanted to get back to her, but was posted for over a year in Germany.  He would call and come to visit her when he was on leave.  But she was refusing to go back to him.  This happened several times before the two of you got friendly. After that, he stopped coming entirely and only recently I caught him stalking her on her way back to the apartment.”

“Did she know? Did you tell her?”

“I certainly did.  Perhaps, she knew that he was in town and they may have even spoken on the phone.”

“Why did not she or you tell me when all this was happening?   We could have prevented the rape from taking place?”

“We thought Mike would lose interest and go away now that Samantha was friendly with another man.  Being in the army, I am sure he must have found out that you are a government official.”

“Anyway, it is a serious matter now, and you will have to testify as a witness.  You will also have to make a police complaint against Jamie.”

Elaine immediately took affright at Bradley’s words.

“Please, Jonathan, you don’t have to involve me or Jamie with the police.  We will settle the differences between ourselves. Just this once, please Jonathan. I am sure Samantha will also agree with me.”

“Understand, Elaine, that I cannot promise anything.  The least I can do, before going to the police, is to conduct my own investigation of Michael Cage.  I will also need to speak to James. Let me have his number and address.”

She was reluctant to do so.  “Please… Jonathan, let it go…”

“Listen to me, Elaine.  It’ll be easy for him after the first time. James must understand the far-reaching consequences of such grievous assaults.  It’s better that he learns to control himself now, than when he is behind bars.”

Elaine gave him the Jamie’s number and address.  “I’ll have to tell him that you wish to speak to him.”

“That’s fine with me.”

Jonathan glanced at his watch, “Elaine, I think I will leave now. Will you be safe?”

“Yes… Yes, Jonathan.” She responded rather quickly, trying to convince him, “I will take care of myself.”

“Call up Samantha. She’s waiting by the phone.  She would want to know that you are safe and sound,” Bradley told her as he walked to the door.

“I will, Jonathan.  You take care too.” Elaine softly closed the door after him.

***

What was going on?  Why hadn’t Samantha told him that she suspected her ex-husband of sexually assaulting her?  Certainly Samantha would have known, despite the mask, that it was Michael since she had lived with him before? Had he done it for revenge?

Could he believe Elaine? As a woman herself, Elaine understood the trauma a woman goes through after a horrible rape. Why was she telling him now, several weeks after the incident? Moreover, what was the cause or reason for the NBA player assaulting her so badly?

These thoughts were running through his mind, as he decided to visit the Crossley Apartments real-estate office located on the first floor of the building, since he already happened to be in the area.

He walked into the office and asked one of the female-clerks there to see the Manager or Supervisor.

“I am Jonathan Bradley,” he said, producing and showing her his FBI badge.
