Preface
“Creativity is ten percent inspiration and
ninety percent perspiration”, Thomas
Edison, Inventor.
Can just everyone
write songs? Yes and no. To some it comes naturally. Others have a desire to do so and then
everyone takes it from there. In both
instances, it has to do with learning and persevering to perfect the art of
songwriting. Inspiration is merely 10%, but the rest 90% can be achieved
through the pleasure of your effort.
Great and famous people including
songwriters and musicians have started from the basics and perfected as they
progressed along.
Just as in the other aspects of our life,
knowledge and experience are crucial to achieving success or personal
satisfaction, the information available in this book will certainly have served
its purpose when the reader finds whatever part of its contents, as being
useful in increasing or improving his or her knowledge and level of songwriting.
The author wrote his first song lyrics in
his school days at the time when young men and women have great dreams and are
enthusiastic about almost everything in life.
Songwriting may have been just a show of
talent or a desire to write, and based mostly on trial-and-error.
Now just as with everything else, knowledge
abounds and songwriting can be easily learned, progress can be faster and
opportunities are many. Which also means less frustrating since you would now
be aware of what you are doing and what you ought not to.
Having himself in later years devoted a
considerable amount of time to learning and perfecting this art as well, though
it can be honestly said here that one never stops learning, and as a result of
consulting and collaborating with other seasoned songwriters, musicians and
artists, the author believes that there is a need to pass on whatever knowledge
and experience acquired so that another budding or aspiring songwriter could
benefit from the information provided in the book and find the task of songwriting less daunting.
Songwriting is definitely different from
writing poetry, though both share many similarities. The obvious difference comes from the fact
that the lyrics have to match with the singing aspect and the melody structure
without which no song is complete.
The practical, systematic guidance
throughout this book will certainly suffice to provide the reader with the basics
required to be able to write lyrics skillfully and then go into composing from simple
to performance standard melodies.
Thus setting the reader on the right
course, and saving a lot of wasted effort and time. The reader learns through
the firsthand experience of others as to exactly how to go about writing some
good songs after applying whatever proven and time-tested concepts, new forms
and ideas learnt, in the process of reading and then studying from this book.
