Prologue
“Each truth you learn will be,
for you, as new as if it had never been written.”
Land
of the Midians - Oasis
near Mt. Horeb.
The feeble,
but wiry tribal with sparse gray crinkled hair, was approaching the ninetieth
year of his life. His unflinching eyes took in every reaction on the faces of
the four men and one woman. They sat in a half-circle before him. Two were his
nephews, one was a niece, the fourth a priest novice and the remaining, a freed
slave turned scribe.
They had
been listening to his sonorous voice, absorbed in his tale, for more than two
hours now. However, he showed no signs of stopping.
The faint flutter of the loose flap at the tent opening was turning obtrusive as the cold winter wind sought to rush inside. Despite the chill in the air displacing the warmth, they appeared oblivious of the change.
The faint flutter of the loose flap at the tent opening was turning obtrusive as the cold winter wind sought to rush inside. Despite the chill in the air displacing the warmth, they appeared oblivious of the change.
When the
narrator paused with a bemused look, they awoke from their dreamlike state. Someone
remembered to secure the flap. After the youth had come back to his seat, the
silence returned.
The old man
loved to put up his large tent near the centuries-old oasis, not far from the
caravan route and the ancient well. He chose to spend here a few days of each
season, away from the bustle of the palace life. This excursion reminded him of
his tribal roots.
Wriggling
his aged frame for warmth inside his clothing, he cleared his voice to declare,
"He was a great man. Yes, the greatest among men."
He waited for
his words to take effect on the young audience. “Let
me repeat for you, he was the greatest ever. Remember what I just
said."
Then
pointing a steady finger at the young scribe, who sat there writing on the
goatskin parchment, "Emir, write every word I say. I recounted so far my
testimony about the culture, gods, and achievements of the Midian people. I
received this knowledge from our wise elders, including my honorable father -
once our prudent ruler and high priest.
"The story I
am going to tell is my witness to even greater events and deeds of a man of no
lesser stature. He is an important part of our Midian heritage. We must record
his tale for posterity's sake. I lived
through most part his life from the time he first arrived as a mere stranger to
dwell with us many, many decades ago.
"He was from
the royal household, a learned man, a natural leader, a military genius and yet
humble before our god Jahve and people. His royal kin betrayed him. Exiled
under treacherous circumstances, they made him a stateless fugitive. Notwithstanding
the numerous odds, he became the all-time leader."
He stopped short
to take a breath before continuing, "You’ll know the person I am talking
about. So listen with care as I tell you his story…”
